Freshman Mentoring
Freshman mentoring is an opportunity for freshman to learn about high school life from upperclassmen who have experienced it for themselves. Students can ask questions to their peers without the pressure of an adult hanging over them. Although attendance is required, many freshman find it enjoyable and build friendships with their mentors. The freshman are mentored twice a month on Wednesday mornings when school starts at 8:04 instead of 7:32. The mentors are juniors and seniors who were approved by guidance after applying the previous school year.
On Wednesday, April 16th the Teen Suicide Prevention Team at West Geauga High School presented a program to fellow students. The team members volunteered to be peer contacts for students at the high school. They participated in a two day workshop presented by Ravenwood Mental Health Center staff members, Deanna Brant, Elise Aitken, Mary Alice Bell, Linda Reed from the Mental Health Association in Geauga County and West Geauga High School Counselor Sarah Widman. After learning facts about the frequency of suicide in the teen population and methods to obtain help, the students developed their own program to present information to classmates.

Students asked classmates to help them diagram a life line of their own child highlighting events throughout this persons long life. Attention was brought back to the time in high school that this person had an especially difficult event and had contemplated suicide. The students emphasized all the good things that happened after that point that would have not transpired if the student had carried through their suicidal thoughts. Students then presented a skit depicting various typical teen social interactions and identified actions of classmates that would be helpful and those that would not. They showed the correct method of obtaining help for a classmate that showed signs of suicidal ideation. The program culminated with a reading of a short story about a student who changed the life of another by showing kindness on an especially difficult day. There was time for questions and introduction of the counselors at the high school who could help if a student was having difficulty. Cards provided by the Geauga County Suicide Prevention Coalition highlighting suicidal symptoms and the do's and don'ts for those who want to help were given to all who attended the program.
