Mythology

Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs-Gretchen, a descendant of Medusa, is trained to send monsters back from where they came. What she doesn’t know is that she is one of three identical triplets. These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.

Songbryd by Anna Silver -Living on the road with her mother, all she's ever really wanted is a normal, stable life in one place. Unable to elude their haunted past, three generations of Byrd women must not only unite, but embrace their heritage as a gift—and their key to a future of love and understanding.

Pegasus: The Flame of Olympus (Pegasus series) by Kate O’Hearn - 13-year-old Emily's life is transformed when Pegasus, the mythological winged horse, crashes onto the roof of her building and takes her to Olympus to face monsters, a corrupt governmental agency, and the quest to keep the Olympic flame burning.

Pandora gets Jealous by Carolyn Hennesy – Thirteen-year-old Pandy is hauled before Zeus and given six months to gather all the evils that were released when the box she brought to school as her annual project was accidentally opened.

Fantasy with magical creatures (not classic mythology)

The Alchymest (Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series) by Michael Scott – Nicholas Flamel (who is mentioned in the Harry Potter series) is alleged to be able to create a potion granting immortality. This story takes place in present day with 15-year-old twins who, as part of a prophecy, become involved in pursuing those that stole the ancient text of magical wisdom. Theme of good vs. evil, prophecies, magic and mythical beings. Mixed reviews

Reading level – 6.4 --352 pages

The Akhenaten Adventure (Children of the Lamp series) by P.B. Kerr – Twin 12-year old twins, descended from a long line of Djinn, have great inherent powers. They must call on these powers a lot sooner than they anticipated, though, because the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten is not as dead as history has so far declared and his legion of seventy magical djinn could tip the balance of power in the magical realm and affect the whole world order.

Reading level – 5.7 –368 pgs.

Amulet of Samarkand (The Bartimaeus series) by Jonathan Stroud – Main character, Nathaniel, is a magician’s apprentice who summons a powerful djinni to seek revenge against a wizard who humiliated him, not understanding that he can’t control the djinni. Magical espionage, murder and rebellion – monsters.

Reading level – 5.9 -- 462 pgs.

Mark of the Thief (series) by Jennifer Nielsen – Takes place in ancient Rome. Nic, the main character, finds a magical amulet that was said to belong to and give Julius Caesar great power. He’s now being pursued, is gaining magical powers, and is caught in a ruthless conspiracy to overthrow the emperor. History, fantasy and action/adventure

Reading level – 5.2—352 pgs.

A World without Heroes (Beyonder series) by Brandon Mull -- Fantasy adventure – 2 main characters, 13-year old Jason and Rachel, are drawn into an alternate world, and end up on a quest to discover the magical word needed to overthrow Maldor, Lyrian's evil emperor. Contains adventure scenes, inventively conceived creatures, and surprising plot twists.

Reading Level – 5.1 – 500 pgs.
