Opportunities for students with special needs include in-house programs for the gifted and talented, the multi-disabled, the developmentally disabled, the specific learning disabled and the severe behavioral disabled. Students with academic and social problems are also assisted with programs throughout their educational experience.
The following are examples of this targeted programming:
Primary Intervention Program – identified primary students receive developmental training for basic skills
Proficiency Program - students receive early intervention to prevent proficiency failure
Teen Institute-high school students participate in peer counseling programs for academic and social adjustment
D.A.R.E. - elementary and middle school students receive instruction in prevention of chemical dependency
Intervention Assistance Teams - made up of 9 or 10 staff members who meet weekly to find creative solutions to help students who have academic, social or emotional difficulties
Reading Recovery, Summer School – to provide extra support for students
West Geauga Local Schools continues to provide a continuum of specialized services for our students with disabilities. Each year the needs of our students with Individualized Education Plans are reviewed and service delivery plans are developed with the assistance of our general and special education teaching staff.
A SEARCH FOR ALL CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES
Every school district has the responsibility of seeking out and identifying children in need of special education services. Although school-age children are identified through each building’s intervention assistance team and referral process, parents of children not yet enrolled who reside within the West Geauga Local School District's boundaries may not be aware that services are available.
