Covering all the Bases

Tryouts are over and it’s time for spring training. The varsity boys
had been preparing themselves for the past couple of weeks for their first game
against Richmond Heights on Wednesday, March 31st, which ended up being cancelled
due to the illness of Coach Frank Rico. The next scheduled game was a double
header on April 3rd, versus Willoughby South. With two weeks until they depart
to Florida for Spring Break, the boys are throwing balls and swinging bats,
training themselves to be in tip-top shape. While staying at the Disney Wide
World Complex, located inside of Disney World, the boys will play seven to nine
games against other teams that have yet to be decided. They depart on the tenth
and arrive home on the seventeenth, with a full day at Disney World on the sixteenth.
This year’s starting line up includes five seniors: Drew Picciano at second, Dave DiFranco at third and pitcher, Brad Davidson at pitcher, Mike Demko at catcher and Brent Skoda in right field. Seven juniors and four sophomores also comprise the varsity as compared to last year’s roster of nine seniors. Starting pitchers include senior Brad Davidson, senior Dave DiFranco, junior Bryan Yenc and sophomore Frank Cikach. Yenc commented, “We have a strong pitching rotation, but I think we really need to work on our hitting.” Last year’s team ended up 13-13 and the main team goal this year is to have a better record and win the C.V.C. The last time varsity boys won the title was back in 2000. Bryan has one main goal in mind just for himself and that is, “…to hit 85 miles per hour pitching. I did it once over summer and I really want to do it again.”
The JV team consists of seven sophomores and seven freshman this year. Sophomore pitcher Brady Burkle said, “I really hope that the team can win the C.V.C. this year for our level.” Their first game was regularly scheduled for the 3rd but was cancelled. With thirteen guys making the freshman team, they are shooting for an undefeated season, also.
