The road to the Final Four
by Katie Brinager, Staff Writer
For the past four months, the boys basketball teams have been working to create perfect seasons. Day-to-day practices and weekly games for the varsity team have helped them to a current 20 - 2 record and 9-1 conference mark. The JV finished the season 17-3, winning the C.V.C. for their level. The freshmen team ended its season with a 20-0 record, placing first in the Mentor Tournament.
After securing victory over Chagrin Falls three weeks ago and beating Perry on 2/27/04, the varsity boys earned sole possession of the C.V.C. title for the first time since 1999. Due to a snow day canceling their game versus Perry, they had about a month to prepare for the day of decision that paid off in the end. The seven seniors knew it would be their last regular season game, pulling it together to win, 67-55. Mike (Reinhard) stepped up and made some key shots for us, commented Senior Drew Picciano. Senior Rob Skuski dunked once again, which fired up the crowd, and everyone knew that the game was over. It was a great atmosphere with all the fans that came and supported us. It was a good feeling to beat Perry in the last game [we] seniors will ever play at West G., said Drew.
March 5th marked the beginning of the post season. After winning the sectional title at Madison, the boys beat NDCL (66-56) and Cortland Lakeview, 53-48. Defeating Painesville Harvey xx gave the team its distirct title and earned West its first place in the regional tournament since 1998 to face Youngstown Liberty on 3/17/04.
The team is very confident going into regionals. Drew said, Since the beginning of the season our goal has been to become district champs. We are just going to keep doing what got us here.
Lets hope its enough to get the boys to Columbus for the state tournament for the first time since our 2nd place finish in 1989.
