Swimmers stayin’ Afloat
by Julie Murawski, Sports Editor
West Gs swim team proved why, West is Best. As the campaign was completed for most of the swimmers at the end of the regular season, two swimmers were still going strong in the post season. Mike Dickard and Jamie Diadiun received scores good enough to advance into the post season meets. Along with teammate Rachel Scholtz, they were all Plain Dealer Players of the Week.
Mike, who is a junior, competes in the 200IM and the 500 Free. He set a school record and broke his own personal records for these events. He placed 4th in sectionals with a time of 211.64 in the 200IM and placed 7th in the 500 Free. Mike is already looking to the future. He hopes to make sectionals over the summer and a major goal for next year is to make it to state. Mike says his favorite thing about swimming is the friends you make. Mike would like to swim competitively after high school for a college.
Senior Jaime Diadiun had a solid season, also. She competed in the 50 Free (in a time of 26.79), 100 free (with a time of 59.82) and the 50 & 100 fly.
The 400 relay team of Rachel Scholtz, Vicky Zengo, Ryann Evert and Jaime Diadiun had a time of 4:16:84. The 200 medly relay team finished with a time of 1:53:69. Swimmers in that event were Ryann Evert, Mandy Okrez, Rachel Scholtz and Jaime Diadiun. Jaime says that her favorite thing about the swim team is that it is a individual and a team sport, saying that you can socialize with the team at meets, but the events are more individual. She could possibly swim next year for Ohio University.
Congratulations to the swimmers for having their finest season in their first year as an official varsity sport !
