West Geauga Fencing Team
The West Geauga Fencing Team has just emerged from a brutal battle of swordsmanship. The state competition held on Saturday, March 6th in Columbus proved a rewarding campaign for our slashing soldiers.
In the team competition, each cadet fought for an individual ranking, and the scores of the top three ranking students from each school were combined to constitute a combined team score. The West Geauga women, led by senior Nicole Scholtz (9th place), senior Kate Witte (15th place), and her sister, freshman Emily Witte (16th place), brought home a second place team finish above Northeast Ohio rival Shaker Heights.
On another battlefield, senior Matt Solomon fought valiantly with his epée. The epée competition has a smaller field of competitors but is generally considered the more select, more difficult tournament. After losing to a member of his local fencing club in the semi-finals, who happens to be ranked 14th in the nation, Matt went on to win 3rd place. It was tough losing to my friend and teammate, Matt said, but if someone had to beat me, Im glad it was him.
Although he fenced with West Geauga his freshman and sophomore years, Matt was not involved in the team competition this year. A knee injury last year prevented him from fighting, so this year Matt has decided to fight independently in the epée division.
