WG track burnin' Rubber
by Heather Vitale, Staff Writer
The 2004 track season has definitely been an interesting one, as there have been numerous meets cancelled due to poor weather conditions. West G's track has also been declared a "hazard" and no meets will be allowed to take place there. Construction is due to start this summer, however, and it should be ready for next season.
Team captains this year are Jordan Wright, Mike Sobolewski, Tim Stevens, Kristen Chapic, Emily Ebersbacher, and Kit Skurek. Tommy Campbell is the only returning regional qualifier from last year's team, and he is one of the top sprinters in the CVC in this area. Some other strong areas on the team are the 4x800 relay, 4x400 relay, 800 meter run, and the high jump. For their meets, the team is competitive in 1600M, 3200M, shot/discus, long jump, and 800M. Some areas they are inexperienced in are hurdles and the pole vault.
There are some new faces who have made an impact this season already: Race Morton, Rich Clark, and Joe Whitely. The head coaches include Mr. Boylan and Mr. Taurasi and the assistant coaches are Mr. Witherite, Ms. Cooey, and Mr. Nightingale.
The Wolverine Invitational was held at NDCL this year and the boys placed 2nd.
At the CVC championships the boys placed 4th and the girls finished 5th..
This season the team has defeated Chagrin, Hawken and Wickliffe but lost to Orange. Some meets already lined up include the Division I District at Ravenna on May 20 & 22, Regionals at Austintown Fitch on May 27 & 29 and State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, June 4 & 5.
The coaches are very proud of the whole team . Coach Boylan said, "This
year and the years to follow will definitely be a challenge, but one that will
hopefully be met. It's definitely not going to be easy, but with hard work and
determination and dedication, nothing is impossible."
