Soccer Comes To End
by Rachel Gorjanc, Staff Writer
Long, grueling practices and running the much-dreaded "loop" clearly
paid off for this year's boys soccer team. The boys finished off the regular
season with an amazing 15-1-0 record, which is the best regular season record
known to the program. These stellar athletes also clinched the C.V.C. with a
conference record of 10-0-0.
The boys had a hard-fought season, playing many talented teams, but always (with
exception of NDCL) coming out on top. The highlight wins of the season included
shutout victories over Bay Village, Kenston, Chagrin Falls and Hawken. Junior
Eric Johnson led the team with fourteen goals, and junior Brian Murphy led the
team with fifteen assists. The boys also worked together to score eighty total
goals for the season, with only nine goals scored against them. It is evident
these boys worked hard all season and had ten shutouts to show for it.
Brian Murphy, Eric Johnson, Mike Reinhard, and Chris Black (who was also the
C.V.C. most valuable player) were awarded first team all - C.V.C., while Aaron
Dean and Kevin Malone were awarded second team all - C.V.C.
West G. was originally seeded second in the district, behind only NDCL. They
knocked off a tough Lake Catholic squad 2 - 1 in the semi - finals, but lost
the district championship to Chagrin Falls, 3 - 2. West G. finished the season
17 - 2, securing the best record in the history of West Geauga Soccer. Congratulations
to Coach Sustin and the team !!
