Weekend Alternatives
by Matt Solomon, Staff Writer

When asked what there is to do on a weekend, most West G. students will gripe about how there is never anything going on and all they ever do is see a movie or go bowling. As it turns out, though, there are things happening for those who are willing to look. Nearly every weekend there are concerts, plays, festivals and other special events all across Cleveland and even closer to home. The best place to look is in the "Friday!" section of the Friday Plain Dealer. Those who are willing to flip through the endless ads, restaurant reviews, and other things of little interest will find an extensive, fairly organized list of everything that is going on in Cleveland. Many kids are also unaware that this title of "student" that we despise so much is actually the key that can get cheap tickets to events that would otherwise be prohibitively expensive. Here is a short list of places that offer discounted tickets for students:
? Cleveland Jazz Orchestra- Box Office # (440) 942-9525. Has jazz concerts many Friday and Saturday nights with $5 tickets for students. Check the web site for the schedule at
? Cleveland Playhouse- Box Office # (216) 795-7000. A variety of plays for only $12 for anyone under 25 years old.
? Great Lakes Theater Festival- Box Office # (216) 241-6000. Fall plays at the Ohio Theater in Playhouse Square for only $11 for students.
? Chagrin Valley Little Theater- Box Office # (440) 247-8955. Small scale but well done local productions, $12 regularly but only $10 for anyone under 18 years old.
Another entertainment opportunity that is available is an upcoming free performance by the Marine Corps Marching Band at Severance Hall on November 17. If you are interested in attending, you must write to the local Marine Corps office and they will mail tickets to you. The address is...
Gung Ho Detachment #650; Marine Corps League; 27099 Miles Rd.;Orange Village, Ohio 44022; Attn: Marine Band tickets
So next time you and your friends are wondering how you will spend your night, bear in mind that there are a number of wonderful opportunities to enjoy performances by excellent actors and musicians. Go out on the town and see a play, hear a concert and have fun!
