Thanks to the varsity boys soccer players, West G. is currently ranked first in the CVC. Coach Sustin has done an excellent job of teaching and guiding them to be all they can be. With stunning confidence and poise, our team represents West Geauga well. The seniors have worked hard to get this far and they include Evan Zusy, Jordan Wright, Jason Beffel, Chris Black, Joel Bihary, and Tim Stevens. Not far behind follow the other team players: Brad Mandel, Brody Leven, Luke Zayicek, Ben Metcalf, Tommy Vanik, Joe Whiteley, Billy Lacava, Chris Grimaldi, Ben Carter, Aaron Dean, Kevin Malone, Eric Johnson, Brian Murphy and Mike Reinhard.
With Brian Murphy and Mike Reinhard leading the team this year as captains, they hope to achieve the same astounding record as last season. Last year the record stood at 15-4-1, while this year stands close behind at 11-1-0. With Chagrin Falls being their biggest rival, Evan Zusy commented, "One thing we need to work on is defense. We have a good, strong team and we could advance in the playoffs this year." Earlier this month, the team secured a victory against Chagrin, solidifying their first - place ranking.
While it may look easy, being a soccer player is tough work. It involves long
practices, running fast and hard, maintaining good breathing, using good skill
tactics, knowing where the ball is at all times, and drinking tons of Gatorade.
With one thing in mind, to win, captain Brian Murphy holds nothing back, commenting, "It's nice being captain but everyone on the team is like a captain; we all have an equal share." He hopes to win the CVC and place first at state. He also said that although Eric, Aaron and he have scored the most goals, each player has been scoring just as well.
