The West Geauga Gymnastics team has high expectations coming into this season.
This year's seniors are Arielle Schindler, Sammie Herzig, Jenny Jesenovec, Jenny
Yoger and Lauren Nelson, who is new to the team. Lauren transferred from Lake
Catholic to West Geauga this year. When asked about how she feels at West G,
she said, "Everyone here is great! I can't wait for the season to start."
When asked about the goals for this season, the girls are shooting for the stars. All the seniors said their goal for the team is to qualify to the state tournament as a team. According to the girls, there is a legitimate chance for that to happen. Returning to the team this year is two-time beam state champion Gina Gastaldo, who hopes to win on beam in the state tournament for a third year in a row.
One of the keys to a successful season is team unity, according to Katelyn Williams “We need to support our teammates.” The team is smaller this year, but the gymnasts don’t think this will be a problem, in fact, a leaner, meaner team may have some advantages! “The team is smaller this year,” said Jenny Yoger “but I think it will just make our team closer.”
One of oddities of this team is that it is not exclusively West Geauga Gymnastics. The gymnastics team partners with rival schools Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and Chagrin Falls. Since Wolverines, Lions and Tigers usually don't mix well in competitive environments, one would expect this "three-headed monster" to crumble within itself. However, the girls say that isn't true with the gymnastics teams. In fact, many of the players have said that they're all friends with one another and they hang out with each other on weekends!
The coaches, Mr. Schutz, Mr. Rogge, and Mr. Rico agree with the high expectations. “We’ll be the best team ever at West Geauga.” said Mr. Schutz. Also coaching is Miss Martin from NDCL and Katie Enbers, who is a West G. alumnus. Soon we will see our gravity defying “three-headed monster” showcase their talents at upcoming meets and tournaments.
