The Greatest Show on Earth
by Chris Amicarelli, Staff Writer

Gymnastics season is under way and all the area schools are visiting West Geauga. Chagrin Falls, NDCL, Orange, Kirtland, and Newbury practice five days per week here at West Geauga High School. It doesn’t make sense for neighboring schools to purchase the very expensive equipment for a team of only ten girls. Our school is very fortunate to have great gymnastics equipment and a very good coaching staff. Head Coach (and fifteen year veteran) Mr. Don Schutz runs the show, assisted by Mr. Wes Rogge, Mr. Frank Rico, Mr. Lou Cirino, and four-time beam state champion and West Geauga alumnae, Gina Gastaldo.
This year’s team is comprised mostly of underclassmen and has only three seniors, Amy Moorefield, Liz Poucher, and Megan Rutledge. All the girls have been working very hard, practicing sixteen hours per week to prepare for competitions. Coach Schutz’s outlook for the season is optimistic: “We have nine letter winners returning, all with varsity experience. And along with the addition of four all-around gymnasts as freshman, we should be very good. We should return to the top of the CVC.”
Gymnastics sectionals and districts are also being held at West Geauga in February. Be on the look-out for juniors Emilee Clark and Leah Smith when these competitions roll around.
