The West Geauga wrestling wolverines are jacked up for the upcoming season. Coach Marino said, “We know we have some quality returning with 1 state qualifier, 1 district placer and 5 previous district qualifiers.” He has every reason to be pumped, too, returning 12 solid starters, the team has the potential to have a historic season.
The wrestlers expected to contribute a lot this year are probable varsity starters Mike November, D.J. Leonetti, Chase McCune, Jimmy Carlo, Edward Duffy, T.C. Pazniyak, Dana Petruccio, Sam Delpra, Mark Delpra, Adam Walters, Jeff Balzano, Denny Farmer, Hayden Angelotta, Zak Poucher and Frank Slapnicker.
One of the hardest parts about the wrestling season is trying to lose weight. “You know, it has been tough losing weight, but Marino’s really been an inspiration because he diets with us and has lost 30 lbs so far,” said senior Chase McCune. Some of the techniques for losing weight include hydrating the body and boring, low-fat food like rice cakes.
Delpra and Angelotta are excpected to challenge for a state place, along with Walters, Pazyniak, Poucher, and McCune. The team has never had more than 3 qualifiers to state in one year, but this year could be the one. “As far as the team, IF everyone shows up, stays healthy, gets to his optimal weight, and performs as he can, we should have a good shot at being 1st or 2nd in the conference.” said Coach Marino.
The team wrestled its first meet at Columbus Desalles on December 8th. Sam Delpra, T.C. Pazniyak, and Zak Poucher placed first in their weights. Jeff Balzano also took first in his pool. Frank Slapnicker and Hayden Angelotta were second; Chase McCune and Mike November took 3rd, while Adam Walters and DJ Leonetti took 4th. The team was 3rd out of 13 teams.
