The West Geauga Wolverine wrestling team is scorching the local wrestling
competition with guerilla-warfare-like tactics. They recently won the C.V.C.
wrestling tournament at Aurora High School. This is a big accomplishment, considering
the team hadn’t won the title since 1984. The West Geauga team placed
first with a score of 229.5, beating the Aurora team with 210. 10 of the 14
wrestlers placed, which also shows that they are solid as a team. They had three
C.V.C. champs including T.C. Pazyniak at 135, Adam Walters at 160, and Hayden
Angelotta at 189. “It’s kind of like being the king of the castle
with a fancy chair,” said Adam Walters about being a C.V.C. champ. Other
placers were Sam Delpra, Mike November, Zak Poucher Frank Slapnicker, Chase
McCune, D.J. Leonetti, and Mark Delpra.
The Wolverines also wrestled in the sectional tournament. They did very well with 5 sectional Champs. Mike November, Sam Delpra, Adam Walter, Hayden Angelotta, Zak Poucher. Other qualifiers were Chase McCune, Mark Delpra, T.C. Pazyniak, Denny Farmer and Frank Slapnicker.
The 10 sectional placers also competed in the district tournament in Akron. They had placers from 1st through 6th. Four wrestlers qualified to wrestle in the state tournament. Adam Walter who placed 1st, Hayden Angelotta placed 2nd, Sam Delpra placed 3rd and Zak Poucher placed 4th. Other wrestlers who placed were Frank Slapnicker (5th) and Denny Farmer (6th).
Adam Walters placed fourth in the state, Hayden placed 6th. Sam and Zak wrestled very well but failed to place. Adam pinned his first two guys. He eventually lost to a two time state champ. Hayden beat some very good wrestlers and demonstrated world class sportsmanship.
This wrestling season was one of the most successful seasons in West Geauga history. They broke several school records including having four state qualifiers. “It was a season to remember,” said Sam Delpra.
