Fencing for a First
by Meghan Offtermatt, Assistant Editor

The fencing team recently traveled to Rocky River to participate in an area competition. Top finisher, Joe Daddario, placed 2nd in foil, losing 10-15 to a B rated fencer. Other placing fencers included Matt Platek, who was 10th. Rachel Saiger, who happens to be the only female on the team, finished 8th out of 20 people. Max Richards placed 20th, and Kevin McKinney came in 8th.
This was an exceptional match for all the fencers, and the team was extremely pleased with the outcome, especially Rachel, as this was her first match of the season since a summer off.
In addition to the fencing competition, Max Richards competed in the saber, a rare competition because of its difficulty. He placed 1st in this competition, racking up 10 more points for the men’s team, leading them to first place.
On January 27th the Snow Belt Challenge will be held at West Geauga Middle School, the first fencing tournament to take place at West Geauga this year.
