Despite a slow start by the varsity boys basketball team, they rang in the New Year with a big win versus Willoughby South on January 8th. 2008 seems to be looking up as junior Gino Notarian scored 19 points and Chris Hall continues to be a “beast” in the post.
This was a big win for the boys, coming off the nail-biting, unbelievable loss to Perry the previous Saturday. The stands were loaded like a baked potatoe with cheese and bacon as the game began. The boys were up at halftime and then suffered a really slow 3rd quarter where only one basket was made. Playing catch-up the whole 4th quarter, the boys tied it with a crazy three-point shot made by junior, Louie Link, in the final seconds of the game. At this point every person on the West G side was on his/her feet, making some noise. With roughly 3 seconds left, Perry had the ball back and somehow, some way, threw up a mercy three-pointer, winning the game. The momentum of the crowd completely changed from excitement to utter disbelief. “Some say it’s better being lucky than good,” said Joe Leonetti, #1 Wolverine and Browns fan.
Regardless of the losses early on, players, coaches and fans are still hopeful and proud of the team. Coach Vosicky has a positive outlook on the season thus far: “The players have taken some time to get acclimated to varsity basketball against some very good teams. They have shown in recent games that they are ready to compete for wins in the second half of the season.”
Tournament time is approaching quickly and the team goal is to win the district championship. Coach Vosicky is, “…positive that as our players’ confidence levels grow, they can compete with any team at the Mentor District II tournament.”
Good Luck, Boys! We’re rooting for you!!
