This One Time at Band Camp…
by Chris Amicarelli, Staff Writer
Auditions for Concert Band are being held the last two-to-three weeks of
October. The way they are auditioned is as follows: Each student receives
the same piece of music to prepare. Each plays individually for Mr. Cosenza.
Every audition is then recorded and evaluated for tone quality, note and rhythm
accuracy, and musicality. Students are then assigned to Concert Band or Symphonic
Band, based on their performances.
You might be asking yourself, “What is Concert Band? How is it different from Symphonic Band and Jazz Band?” Well, Symphonic Band and Concert Band are actually both the same type of music. Symphonic Band is just a little more advanced. But Jazz band is only allowed to use trumpets, trombones, saxophones, and have a small rhythm section with a guitar, drums, and piano.
This year’s band concerts, located in the high school gym at 7:30 p.m., are Thursday, January 31, 2008 and Thursday, May 1, 2008. Another contest is being held at Mentor High School on Friday, March 14. Each judge at the contest gives a rating of I, II, III, IV, or V, I being the best and V being the worst. Last year both Concert and Symphonic Bands received I’s from every judge.
