The Girls soccer team took on the Lake Catholic Lady Cougars at Lake Catholic High School in Mentor, OH on October 21st. The match was a district playoff game and was bound to be great. Both teams had big expectations in this match towards each other. The Wolverines and Cougars both came out swinging with aggressive play and tried to control the tempo. Lake came out shooting, but Senior Keeper Rhianna Guarnera had some big times saves to try and slow down the Cougar offense. The game was tied at 0-0 at halftime.
The second half consisted of good opportunities for both the
West Geauga Wolverines and Lake Catholic Cougars. Senior Caitlin Curtis led
the team with four shots on goal. The Wolverine defense was consistent throughout
the entire game. Freshman defender Hannah Brinning cam out aggressively on the
defensive end for the Wolverines. In the 55th minute of play the Wolverines
committed a foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Lake Catholic capitalized
on this opportunity pocketing the only goal of the match. The score was 1-0,
and West Geauga needed the equalizer to keep their season afloat. Maria May
also contributed to the teams offensive attack and more importantly kept their
moral high. Though they fought until the end, the Wolverines season ended with
a heartbreaking 1-0 loss.
