College and Career Readiness Test Selection

Dear Parents of West G Juniors:

All public school districts in Ohio are now required to offer either the SAT or the ACT as one potential path to high school graduation. The college entrance test is to be given in the spring of the students’ junior year. Two other paths to graduation also exist. One is successful passage of end-of-course exams – the most typical route for high school students. The third is a vocational certificate for students entering a specific work-related field like welding or cosmetology.

As a school district, West Geauga has chosen to utilize the ACT to fulfill the college entrance exam graduation pathway in 2016. This was not an easy decision. Various factors weigh in favor of both ACT and SAT, but districts must choose only one. Local school districts vary in their choices.

The ACT will be given free of charge to West Geauga juniors this spring. While passage is not a requirement to graduate unless students fail to pass the prescribed end-of-course exams, students are encouraged to prepare for the ACT and to put forth their best effort. Scores on college entrance exams like ACT and SAT heavily influence the schools to which students are admitted and the corresponding scholarship dollars that the students receive.

If you have questions about Ohio’s new graduation requirements and the place that the ACT will have in your student’s academic experience, you can find information that was shared with parents by Mrs. Nancy Benincasa, West G Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Mr. Jay Bishop, West G High School Principal, on September 13, 2016.
