Golf has been called the “Sport of Kings” over the years ! While that might or might not be true, this fall it was definitely the “Sport of Wolverines” for the boys team.

There were a total of 8 men on the team this year with the lone senior being Ruslan Abakumov. junior golfers included, Mason Kirchner, Aidan Garvey, and Alexander Luther. Alex Lavin, Travis Johnson, and Armen Maksoudian were the “sophomore sensations” and Max Beccia was the single freshman.

The boys golf team played strongly this season. At the CVC pre-season tournament at Pine Hills, they finished 5th, posting a team total of 382.  The team was led by Mason Kircher’s 89 and Armen Maksoudian’s 93.

They were led by head coach, middle school math teacher, Mr. Jay Kleteka.  “The teams signature win of the season came on the road against Orange at Highland Golf Course when the team shot 179, winning by four strokes,” the coach said. Leading the Wolverines was Aidan Garvey (with a score of) 43, Travis Johnson, 44, Ruslan Abakumov, 44, and Alex Lavin’s 48.

The team posted their best score of the season (176) versus Wickliffe with Travis Johnson shooting 41, Aidan Garvey 42, Armen Maksoudian 45, and Max Beccia, 48. In the teams’ 5 stroke win over Berkshire, Mason Kirchner lead the team with a low round of 46, followed by Alex Lavin’s 48.

When asked what his favorite moment of the season was, Ruslan said, “The golf dinner. Definitely, the golf dinner !”

The team had an average round score of 44, with Travis Johnson having the lowest round score of the season at 41.

In the CVC post-season tournament at Windmill Lake, the team posted a rain-shortened round of 197, good for 5th place.  Aidan Garvey had the low round of 47, followed by Armen Maksoudian at 49.

The team finished 8th out of 14 teams at the Division II Sectional golf tournament at Quail Hollow Country Club with Armen Maksoudian posting the low round for 18 holes with a score of 95.

With only one senior graduating, the future looks bright for the golfers.  See more at:  https://wgwhirlwind.org/1389/sports/drive-for-show-and-putt-for-dough/
