Cross Country Boys FInish Successful Season
By Kyle Csumitta

The boys cross country team looked to establish itself as an upper division squad in the CVC this year. Led by seniors Ben Mihacevich, Nick Kozer, Gio Luciano and Brandon Preda, it appears that the mission was accomplished.

The team looked sharp with a win in the 49th Annual George Gross XC Invitational, hosted by Cuyahoga Heights at Valley View Woods, on October 3. Led by Sophomores John Patterson (3rd place in a time of 17:55) and Ken Kirk (4/18:11) the Wolverines bested Lake Ridge Academy 61-73. The team also finished second (93 points) at the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday, September 22. Led, once again, by sophomores Patterson (6th / 17:15) and Kirk (7th / 17:33), junior Joey Tirabassi came in 20th (18:14), senior Mihacevich 31st (18:46), and freshman Lorenzo Linek finished the strong showing by placing 39th in 19:15.

The boys have consistently finished in the top 3 over their last two meets. Johnny Patterson’s 17:15 placed him on the West Geauga XC record board. His run gave him the 11th fastest 3.1K time in West G history. The record was set by Ryan Hawley in 1991 (16:26). “I continue to be impressed each week with the performances of Johnny and Kenny. They are consistently finishing in the top 10 at each race,” said West Geauga head coach Mr. John Boylan. “They continue to push each other.”

The Wolverines main goal was to qualify as a team to regionals (last done in 2004). Perseverance is the motto for the rest of the team while trying to make that happen. While the team did not qualify as a whole unit, Patterson and Kirk completed a successful cross country season last Saturday competing individually in the regionals. “Qualifying and competing on that level is truly an accomplishment,” said Coach Boylan. Both runners now have the experience that they can share with their teammates and lead them to regionals next season. “The course was very tough, especially with the mud that covered the entire course,” said Patterson. “I went out pretty hard to get a good position early, but the course made things rough the second half of the race. Overall it was a great experience to cap my successful season.”

The boys also ended their season finishing 3rd in the CVC with a total of 87 points and over the course of the season Aidan Murley-Schaffer, Dakota Deets, Nicholas Cochran, and Luke Hanna also competed at the varsity level.  See more at:  https://wgwhirlwind.org/1364/sports/cross-country-boys-finish-successful-season/
