Rolling in the Deep

Despite smaller numbers in the overall program, the boys and girls swimming team members are pushing to meet their goals the 2018 season. On the team, overall, there are 10 female swimmers, 5 male swimmers, and 3 divers. The seniors on the team are Kami Goodrick, Bethany Heffron, Andres Lujan-Salas, and Emma Roth.

So far this season, the teams are winless in dual meets, but that doesn’t discourage the swimmers from reaching their personal goals and improving their times. Boys team captain, Andres Lujan Salas, said the number of swimmers on each team has decreased over the years, but talented underclassmen have impressed the team with their skills this year. He also says that the upperclass swimmers are swimming their best times and having their best races.

The girls team placed third of the four teams, participating in the Geauga County Championship meet, beating NDCL but finishing behind both Hawken and Chardon (both of which have at least double the amount of girls as West G’s team). They also finished 2nd at the Cleveland Heights relay meet in December. Head Coach Mrs. Debbie Diadiun’s goal for the season was to focus on, “…individual victories and personal improvements.”

Senior Kami Goodrick was the state DII Diving Champion last season and has shown great improvement throughout her years on the West Geauga team. More notable swimmers include CJ Contizano and Joshua Burdecki. Contizano and Burdecki, Diadiun added, “…are very focused and show nice strength and power in the water.”

Every few weeks during the season, “Red Cap” awards are given to swimmers who, “Show outstanding work ethic, leadership, and effort at practice,” said Coach Diadiun. Bethany Heffron, CJ Contizano, and Fiona Fisher have won the award this year so far.

The team celebrated senior night on January 26 at Cleveland Heights to wish their seniors the best after this last season at West Geauga. Senior team captain Emma Roth said, “I’ll miss all the new friendships that I have made because of the team and the support my teammates always give me.” That night, the team also held a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research.
