Diving into the Deep End
By Elizabeth Marino, Staff Writer

It’s been said that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks…and that might be true. It’s also been said that the best predictor of future behavior is past actions ! We like that one better. And because of that, it should come as NO surprise that we’re writing another article about West Geauga’s female divers and their participation in the OHSAA Division II state championships. 2018 marked senior Kami Goodrick’s 4th state placement in the OHSAA Division II diving meet ! It was also the second trip to the state diving meet for sophomore, Hannah Zahniser.

The state diving meet took place in Canton at the C.T. Branin Natatorium on Wednesday, February 21, 2018! Both West Geauga divers had a great day. Kami ended her high school career by placing 3rd overall and Hannah finished 11th of the 24 ladies competing. Goodrick’s final score was an impressive 449.10 (the state champion scored 476.15). Hannah finished with a final score of 373.15. Like many individual sports, multiple placers are recognized. In diving, the top 16 are considered “all – Ohio,” and make the final cut, so this is quite an accomplishment for the ladies and the West G diving team.  See more at:  https://wgwhirlwind.org/1248/sports/diving-into-the-deep-end-2/

When asked about her final season at West Geauga, Goodrick, who has signed a letter of intent to continue her career at The University of Akron next year, said, “It was very bittersweet. I’m proud to say I was in the top 3 all 4 years.” Kami won the D-II state title a year ago with a 468.30, was second as a freshman and third as a sophomore. “It’s more than just diving, though. It’s about all the people I’ve met on the way and how they helped me and vice-versa. I’m so happy I’ve had this opportunity.”

Hannah, who was also pleased for the most part with her performance, said, “I couldn’t believe that I made it to states for the second year in a row. My experience at state was amazing.”  Zahniser noted that had it not been for a poor last dive, she probably could have placed in the top 10. “Overall the meet was fun and I am pretty happy with the results because they were a big improvement from last year.”
