Dear West Geauga Resident,
We are rapidly approaching the end of the first semester of
the 2017-2018 school year. It is indeed an exciting time. A lot is happening in
our school community.
This week, the Ohio Department of Education notified our district that we received several awards. Four were “Overall A Awards” given to three of our buildings and to the West Geauga Local School District. The fourth was a “Momentum Award” given to our district for exceeding expected student growth and earning grades of “A” on all of the Value Added measures on the state’s District Report Card.
Currently, the West Geauga Local School District is in the
midst of a Facility Master Planning project undertaken to determine and study
current and future building needs. Several committee meetings have been held to
solicit community input. Soon, those committees, in cooperation with BSHM
Architects, will be making a recommendation to the West G Board of Education
related to the renovation and/or replacement of district buildings.
The West Geauga Board of Education is also studying the
possible consolidation of the Newbury Local School District with West G. Many
factors, short-term and long-term, are components of that study. Ultimately,
the decision will rest on what is good for the students and residents of our
community and its schools. Such consolidation has been the subject of
discussion for decades; it is time to decide upon a course of action.
This past year, academic performance in West Geauga resulted in our district being named one of the twenty-eight “A” rated districts in Ohio. This is an accomplishment of which we are rightfully proud. With that noted, we are not satisfied because we know that we still have ample room to improve. Our studenst and our residents deserve the best. With your continued support, that is what the West Geauga Local School District will strive to offer.
Rich Markwardt, Ph.D.
