The 2018 West Geauga boys basketball team delivered something we have not seen at West Geauga since 2005. A CVC title in boys basketball! After defeating Beachwood 75 – 74 last week, the boys secured the championship banner for the 2018 season.
The team is led by West Geauga graduate, Mr. Jeff Javorek, and assistants Mr. Doug Irwin, Mr. Ryan Dickard, and Mr. Hayden Diedrich. The staff has been together for 3 years now. On the varsity there are currently 15 players, 12 on the junior varsity and 10 freshmen. Coach Javorek said the numbers are at an all-time high for the program. The team’s record to date is 14 – 3, overall, 8-2 in the CVC. They won the Hudson Holiday Tournament.
The team is led by 6 seniors: Jax Shenkel
, Caleb Ramey
, Mark Sexton
, Nico Morgano
, Carmen Calo
, and Matt Podojil
. When asked which individuals have “stood out” so far in performances, attitude and work ethic, Coach Javorek said, “Jax Shenkel and Caleb Ramey have led us in the scoring department; they have been very consistent for us each night. Mark Sexton and Josh Irwin have also been huge additions and have brought a lot to our success. Mark has been locked in all season long and Josh has been our physical presence inside. We have had a strong bench presence, which has included Matt Podojil, Stephen Javorek
, Nico Morgano and Carmen Calo.”
The basketball team also has benefitted tremendously from having 6’6’’ freshman, Josh Irwin
, join the program through open enrollment. Coach Javorek said that, “It definitely changes the atmosphere of our program, especially when one of the things we have lacked was size and interior play. Josh has been able to control the glass for us this season and has averaged double digit rebounds, which takes a lot of pressure off of our guards.”
The goal for this season was to win the CVC and finish with at least 15 wins. Team is right on track for that, still having 3 more games left in the season. The team plans on accomplishing that by working hard every day until the end of the season. Once the regular season ends, the team has secured the #3 seed for the post-season district tournament. According to Shenkel, “We have a lot more experience this year and we are doing a better job at finishing close games.”
The coaches have enjoyed this group of players and being around them on a daily basis. They work hard and are focused on what needs to be done every day. Another thing the coaches would like everyone to know about the basketball team is that the program is “on the rise,” and building from the bottom up, starting in 3rd grade, through middle school and continuing into high school.
All the hard work the players and coaches put is starting to pay off at all levels! Last night’s senior night game versus NDCL ended with a 63 – 62 victory. On to the playoff’s… See more at: https://wgwhirlwind.org/1237/showcase/we-are-the-champions/
