School District Report Card Released

Dear West Geauga Parents/Guardians:

Each year, the Ohio Department of Education publishes a local district report card for each of the state’s public school systems. These report cards offer a partial picture of every district’s successes and weaknesses. The 2016 report card was released today.

I am pleased to note that West Geauga has made significant academic progress in the past year. While work remains to be done, as a community, we should be proud of our gains.

It is significant to note that the district has received a grade of “A” in both “Progress” and “Value Added” for 2016. This represents a huge improvement.

An examination of the performance indicators reveals significant gains in many areas. The percent of students deemed “Proficient” or above increased in almost every reported area. In some cases, that improvement was by more than 30%.

I greatly appreciate the efforts of our students who did their best on these tests. I am also very grateful to the teachers, principals, and support staff who shifted instruction in 2016 to address the new state learning standards more fully. Our results show that they were successful.

Even before the new report card was issued, we were anticipating and addressing areas that are identified on the report card as weak ones for our district. We are expecting marked improvements in those areas during the current school year.

West Geauga’s district Performance Index rank has gone from 133rd in Ohio in 2015 to 32nd in Ohio in 2016. Overall, I am very pleased with the new performance results . . .  but I know that we can do even better. With your continued support, we will do our best to prove so. Thank you for all that you do to help us.

Sincerely,

Rich Markwardt, Superintendent
