Homework

Recommendations

Homework in first grade serves several purposes. It provides additional practice with concepts that have been taught during the school day. It is also meant to give first graders a sense of responsibility. Ideally, your child will be able to complete homework (with help from an adult if necessary) and turn it in on the next school day or whenever specified by the teacher. All teachers have a routine for turning in homework or books each morning. This is a routine that takes time to practice, but will eventually be a predictable and natural start to each school day! Finally, homework is the best way parents can see what is being learned at school. By seeing the assignments each week and assisting with any of the learning tasks, or reviewing them before being returned to school, parents see what concepts are being taught, as well as how well their child understands these concepts or skills.

The first grade teachers send home "just right" books that the students have read in a guided reading group, spelling words, and math homework as needed. We believe that homework should take approximately 15 minutes. Please indicate on a homework page if something was too challenging for your child or if the directions were confusing.

'Make-up' work for missed days will be sent home as needed.
