Seventh-grade students at West Geauga Middle School are gaining valuable real-world skills through the school’s Career Connection course, designed to help them explore potential career paths as they prepare for high school and beyond. The course features a newly developed curriculum introduced this school year, offering engaging content and hands-on learning experiences.
The class encourages students to assess their personal interests and strengths while learning about a wide range of career options that may align with their skills and goals. Lessons include how to write a professional email, how to complete employment applications, and how to understand terms on a typical paycheck, such as the difference between gross pay and net pay, as well as how tax deductions affect earnings.
Recently, students had the opportunity to put their skills into practice by participating in mock interviews with their classmates. During the activity, they practiced essential interview techniques, including giving a confident handshake, positive and professional body language, maintaining strong eye contact, speaking clearly and confidently, and staying poised even when nervous. These experiences help prepare students for future jobs, internships, and leadership opportunities.
